Quark Lepton Mass Hierarchies and the Baryon Asymmetry
The mass hierarchies of quarks and charged leptons as well as a large νμ-ντ mixing angle are naturally explained by the Frogatt-Nielsen mechanism with a nonparallel family structure of chiral charges. We extend this mechanism to right-handed neutrinos. Their out-of-equilibrium decay generates a cosmological baryon asymmetry whose size is quantized in powers of the hierarchy parameter ǫ2. For th...
متن کاملThe Small Observed Baryon Asymmetry from a Large Lepton Asymmetry
Primordial Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) tightly constrains the existence of any additional relativistic degrees of freedom at that epoch. However a large asymmetry in electron neutrino number shifts the chemical equilibrium between the neutron and proton at neutron freeze-out and allows such additional particle species. Moreover, the BBN itself may also prefer such an asymmetry to reconcile p...
متن کاملQuark and lepton mass textures
We review ideas for explaining the pattern of fermion masses and mixing angles based on a spontaneously broken family symmetry. 1 The form of the quark mass matrices. The fundamental parameters of the Standard Model or its supersymmetric extension that are responsible for fermion masses and mixings are the Yukawa couplings or,equivalently, the fermion mass matrix. Unfortunately we do not have s...
متن کاملLepton and Quark Mass Matrices
We propose a model that all quark and lepton mass matrices have the same zero texture. Namely their (1,1), (1,3) and (3,1) components are zeros. The mass matrices are classified into two types I and II. Type I is consistent with the experimental data in quark sector. For lepton sector, if seesaw mechanism is not used, Type II allows a large νμ-ντ mixing angle. However, severe compatibility with...
متن کاملLepton Asymmetry of the Universe and Charged Quark-Gluon Plasma
The lepton asymmetry of order one is not excluded experimentally and, if present, can lead to interesting phenomena in the early Universe. It is shown that, when the temperature is above the quark-hadron transition, the lepton asymmetry induces chemical potentials for electric charge and for baryon number, and makes the quarkgluon plasma electrically charged.
